Buy Domestic. Buy Local. Buy to Help.

There are many economic benefits of open trade between countries. Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, millions of American jobs had strong connections to trade and depended on selling outside our borders.

These jobs were part of an overall business activity that saw hundreds of thousands of companies in the United States exporting their products.

Imported goods were plentiful and reasonably priced, we had all the variety we wanted, and we really didn’t give much consideration where they were manufactured. We had all the variety we wanted and goods flowed in both directions across our borders.

Many, many more benefits can be cited by academics, economists, and business leaders due to this type of free flowing trade. The reality though, the world is changing.

Quickly.

We will get through the COVID-19 Pandemic and will find out soon what the future holds for our “new normal.” This new environment will be more challenging economically since overall business activity will take some time to return to healthy levels. We can further boost our domestic economic conditions with a simple decision:

If it’s available, buy the product that’s made in the USA!

A Simple Decision

We all make many daily decisions on how to best provide and care for, our families. What to do, where to go, what to buy… we do what we feel is right for those we love.

JADCOM Media suggests that should not change!

What we are suggesting is to make one preliminary decision first, when considering the “what to buy” question posed above. At least start by considering first if the product you are looking to buy is made in the USA. If it is, great! If it isn’t – and it’s still the best choice for your family – then OK… take care of your family.

That’s it. That’s all we have to do to help boost our domestic economy.

Manufacturing Bulls Eye: Hit Any Part of the Target

Buy Domestic, In State, Locally
Hit the target to help the USA!

There are a number of ways to make sound Made in the USA buying decisions – regular decisions that cross our paths daily.

Each decision can benefit the domestic economy (read that as you, me, your family and friends, etc.) Anything Made in the USA is good. Goods made in your home state is better. The best situation is to buy products made very, very close to home. Many call that last one “hyper-local.”

No matter which part of the target you hit, you will be causing a domestic economic benefit to occur. Start with Made in the USA, focus locally if possible, and you will never go wrong. It’s just a matter of “HOW MUCH” of a difference you can make.

What Kind of Difference Can You Make?

Let’s start at what economists call the “macro” level. The Big Picture. Buying anything made in the United States – even if some of the components come from out of the country – yields enormously more benefits than something made overseas.

Micro economics is focused on a more local level. Individuals, related groups, and companies make up their own economic ecosystem. Micro is a functional subset of the Macro environment.

If you really want to dig deep into the details of economic theory, you are encouraged to take an Economics class. I took the whole sequence in college: Macro, Micro, and International. This was by far my favorite area of study. Here, we’ll take a more basic view touching on a few key impacts as you “make a difference.”

Jobs

This is the big one. No matter how you look at it, a product made in the USA will have more of an impact on hiring domestically than a product that is made elsewhere.

Period.

The reason? The Multiplier Effect. Dictionary.com defines it as:

An effect in economics in which an increase in spending produces an increase in national income and consumption greater than the initial amount spent.

Here’s how this works:

When widgets are bought from a widget maker in the USA, our dollars flow to that company. There may or may not be retailers, distributors, and wholesalers, in between. If so, they participate in this model.

Those dollars pay wages to employees. Employees use those dollars for housing, food, clothing, entertainment, sandwiches at the lunch joint across the street from the plant, etc. Those businesses use the dollars spent with them to pay their employees, pay for housing… and the cycle continues.

As soon as a product made outside the United States is purchased, the cycle is broken. The dollars leave the USA and add to a trade imbalance. Selling US assets and practicing unsustainable borrowing to repatriate those US dollars isn’t a good long term solution.

Want more? Now it’s time for that Economics class.

Environmental Impacts

The United States of America has some of the most stringent environmental protection policies in the world. OK, this is not meant to pick a fight or take any sort of sides. Think for just a minute of the many countries who simply don’t care what kind of pollution they create.

  • Are we the best? Probably not.
  • Are we better than most? Probably so.

Products made in the United States are more likely to be safer, more environmentally kind, and better for our health overall. Our attitude toward clean manufacturing processes are good and getting better all the time. Many companies are focusing on “Zero Waste to Landfill” strategies and doing quite well at it!

Buy a product made in the United States and you’ve contributed to a cleaner planet!

Human Rights

American workers are protected by some of the best labor standards and working conditions in the world. Sure, imported products are often less expensive, but there’s a reason for that. One is the cost of living being considerably lower. But that is because the country is not as developed as the USA.

With development comes protections. You know… like child labor, minimum wage laws, and product safety standards.

Buy a US made product. It’s the right thing to do.

Quality

This was saved especially for last.

From product safety to American pride and engineering ability, products made in the USA are very good and getting better in comparison every year.

When we see the “Made in USA” label, we know the craftsmanship and engineering quality is very, very good. If not, that product won’t be around long.

Sure, that product may be a bit more expensive, but we’ve already seen the many benefits from buying products Made in the USA. No one is asking you to jeopardize your family’s budget. The best way to get started is to start small and look for single opportunities to make that “domestic” purchase.

Amazon Not (Always) the Enemy

Amazon often gets a bad rap. OK, sometime’s there’s an argument for that, but when used properly, it can be a great boon to the Made in America movement. How?

Convenience.

Well, for the “buying” part, that is. For the “shopping” part, JADCOM Media is where you need to start. We will always – and only – serve up products made in the USA! Whether it’s Amazon or other distributors and retailers, that’s our mission.

You may be saying, but that doesn’t help my local merchant. That’s true. But our focus here is the “Made in USA” part. We don’t discount the importance of buying local, but we have to pick our battles. You’re in a better position to buy from your local merchants; we can’t help with that.

Where we can help is to identify those products Made in the USA, and serve them up in a convenient manner (Amazon and others) so that you can support our domestic manufacturers. We’ll do our best to tell you in which state they are made so you can target your purchases as you see fit.
